Bruno Fernandes joins Manchester United - Most expensive winter transfer
Premier League side Manchester United have signed Bruno Fernandes from Lisbon-based Sporting. The Red Devils confirmed the deal, which makes the 25-year-old the most expensive signing of the winter transfer window on Wednesday.
João Mário now number two Sporting's record departures Zur Übersicht Sporting confirmed the official numbers of the transfer via a stock market report. The Portuguese club will receive €55 million (£49.5 million) up front, which is a new record for the Portuguese side.
Including bonuses the transfer could grow to €80 million (£68 million), which makes Fernandes the most expensive midfielder in history behind Philippe Coutinho—should he hit all bonuses Fernandes could pass Zinédine Zidane (€77.5 million) and Kevin de Bruyne (€76 million).
The first €15 million add-ons is for domestic and Champions League appearances. The remaining €10 million will be triggered should Fernandes achieve exceptional personal goals, such as winning the Ballon d'Or. The midfielder will earn £70,000 a week before bonuses and remain under contract until 2024.
Fernandes' former club Sampdoria will also benefit from the transfer and receive 10% of the fee. The same will be the case for Sporting should Manchester United ever opt to sell the player.
A lucrative deal for Sporting. The Leões signed Fernandes for just €9.7 million (£8.72 million) from Sampdoria in the summer of 2017.
Since then Fernandes has been involved in 115 goals in 137 games. His market value has grown to £54 million, which makes him the fourth most valuable Portuguese player on the planet.
